Objective To investigate the current health literacy of grass-roots troops at a military unit, analyze the influencing factors, and provide data for targeted health education. Methods The "National Residents' Health Literacy Monitoring Questionnaire" was issued to ordinary soldiers at a military unit to find out about their health literacy. Based on single-factor group comparison and multi-factor Logistic regression analysis, the influencing factors were identified. Results The health literacy of these soldiers was 22.81%. Literacy was the highest with basic knowledge and beliefs(37.59%), followed by healthy lifestyles and behavior (28.44%), and health skills (22.12%). Literacy of the six types of problems was the highest with health information (74.99%), followed by safety and first aid (73.98%), awareness of health(41.27%), basic health care(25.06%), chronic disease prevention(22.75%) and infectious disease prevention (22.16%). Univariate analysis showed that gender, age, levels of education, marital status, smoking status, chronic diseases, family members with chronic diseases and self-assessed health status were statistically different between different groups. The difference in the health information literacy of people with different self-assessed health status, and in the safety and first aid literacy of smokers and non-smokers was P=0.001. The difference in the literacy of groups chronic disease prevention among people with different chronic diseases was P=0.011. The difference between other was P<0.001. There were statistically significant differences in on education levels of parents, locations of families, and ethnic groups. Multi-factor Logistic regression analysis showed that gender, age, education levels, smoking status, chronic diseases, chronic diseases among family members, and self-assessed health status were independent influencing factors of health literacy. Conclusion The factors that affect health literacy include gender, age, education levels, smoking status, chronic diseases, and self-evaluated health status.
